Soft Viola Island

I took a walk this afternoon past the Whitney Museum of American Art and this picture was on display outside for the current exhibitions. It's called Soft Viola Island by Claes Oldenburg. He's mainly a sculptor but the museum is also showcasing some of his drawings and films. There's something very whimsical about it.

Cover Art

I didn't get a chance to blog about this before I went to work this morning: I'm in love with the cover art for the new Phoenix cd. After a little investigation, I found out that it's done by British artist Jody Barton. The rest of his stuff doesn't really look like this but kudos on an awesome cover.

Little artworks.
I've always been a big fan of cards (thanks Mom!) but I've recently been hooked on checking them out on Etsy. There's so many that are great little artworks... much too cute to just send [then ignore]. Paired with these frames from Ikea ($2.99 for a 2-pack!) you can get a double dose of cute for under $10. Yay!

...easy as 1, 2, 3

Today's all about the ABC's. I was in the subway the other day and I noticed that the MoMA has a new exhibit (running until June 15, 2009) titled Tangled Alphabets. Latin American artists León Ferrari and Mira Schendel have a series of works addressing language as the main subject matter. It looks quite interesting- everyone should check it out [sidenote: the Frank Lloyd Wright exhibit at the Guggenheim starts this Friday].
Meanwhile, I've had a couple other ABC's sitting around in a folder waiting to talk about. The first are the Spinning ABC stools by Esther Ermers. She took a rotating typeface to produce these stools. Obviously, 26 in all- one for each letter. The other, just some fun paperclips from Stephen Reed Design.

Band of Gold

Hmm... this was quite interesting. Artist Lee Gainer has put together a collection of images "investigating the evolution" of the engagement ring. It's based on the idea that the groom should be spending at least two months salary on the ring that he chooses. There are twenty prints each with the occupation and nine rings based on the average salary for these jobs. They mostly look the same which I was actually surprised about. Check them all out here.

More Concert Snipits
Today I decided to click on a couple of the millions of links I have bookmarked on my computer and I came across this one for yeastCulture. They're a creative agency based in London that produces music videos, commercials, visuals- things of that nature. They concentrate on their work meeting between film, sound and art. Their website is really amazing and has a really diverse catalogue of work. The reason that I know who they are is because I had gone to see Jamie Cullum like 2 years ago (?) and they did all the graphics and movies during his show. Please check out all the stuff they did for him under his name. My personal favorite from these is "Fascinating Rhythm". Also check out the music video they did for his song "Photograph" which I always forget how much I really love until I haven't listened to it in a while. yeastCulture really made that concert memorable and I just had to seek them out afterwards to check out the rest of their work. It's always a treat to rediscover them.

Concert Posters

I've always been a huge fan of concert posters. I'm not sure why, there's just something about them that I can't resist. These make great, easy artwork that always looks classy. Bonus points if you actually went to the show. I especially love these ones from The Small Stakes. I want to buy them all!

Simple Love

I'm in love with this print from MyLittleUndergound. I'm mostly in love with its simplicity. It says "Get in here."
