OC Performing Arts Center

I'm not so sure yet that I'm a big fan of this one yet but the picture in red certainly caught my eye. Check out the article that I found about it when I accidentally typed in We Heart This instead of the one I just posted about. Oh well, that's how penicillin was made.

Legos

Ha! Lego's has just introduced a line of Frank Lloyd Wright Lego's! They are in an architecture series of 6 buildings including his two most famous: Falling Water and the Guggenheim Museum. These have been released hand-in-hand with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation and his current exhibit at the Guggenheim Museum.

Danish Radio Concert Hall

Here's another building to add to my collection of all things music. [Sigh- someday I'll get to design one]. I came across this one in the latest issue of Interior Design. This is the Danish Radio Concert Hall in Copenhagen, Denmark. Designed by Ateliers Jean Nouvel this glass box lights up with color and sound containing four music halls, a restaurant-bar and shops. I posted a while back about UNStudio which was also featured in this article.

Troy, NY

Yet another performing arts venue that's on my love list. This time, it goes to the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center located in Troy, NY. EMPAC was just completed in late 2008 by the team at Grimshaw New York for the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Go here to read about it where I found this article. PS. Grimshaw Architects have a pretty cool website.

Syracuse in Interior Design Magazine

I was on the bus heading out to Ikea yesterday morning and I was thumbing through the newest issue of Interior Design. This article caught my eye and to my surprise, it was built in Syracuse! It's Slocum Hall's auditorium in Syracuse University's School of Architecture. The auditorium is enclosed by bamboo plywood punched with CNC-milled holes. The whole project and article are pretty interesting and it's great that it's also green. Check out the complete article here.

Current Obsession

Oh my goodness. I can't even tell you how completely obsessed I am with this music theater from UNStudio. First off, there's nothing I love more- want to DO more than design these spaces. This is what I did for my thesis and I can't get enough of these buildings. When I saw this Mumuth Theater in Graz, Austria my heart went a pitter-patter. The theater itself in the building is a "black box" or basically a blank canvas to the artist. However, the public spaces are a series of movement based volumes. Essentially, a sculpture in a box. The auditorium can seat up to 450 people, so relatively small but makes a wonderful intimate setting with the artist. I had a really hard time finding pictures of the actual performance space but check out this website if you want to see loads more pictures. I really wish this firm wasn't located in Amsterdam because I would jump at the chance to work there. Everything is so bold and vibrant. Oh, it's love.
